Japheth Nuhu, the Coach of Nigeria Men’s Volleyball Senior team, says the players are battle ready for the upcoming 12th All African Games in Morocco.
Nuhu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday, adding that the players were in high spirit.
According to him, “the level of determination and enthusiasm among the players is high”.
He said that the team was set to make Nigeria proud, adding that they had been in camp for over a month.
He said that the team required the utmost support of the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, led by Musa Nimrod, and prayers of all Nigerians.
Nuhu said that the boys knew what was at stake and could not disappoint Nigerians, who were eager to watch the team at the games.
He said: “The last time we won the gold medal in Volleyball was during 2003 Committee for the Organisation of African Games held in Abuja, Nigeria.
“We promise not to lower the standard of our game when we get to the 2019 games in Morocco.
“We know that teams from other countries are not pushover. So we are focused and by the grace of God we will do our best.
“We shall strive to be among the teams that will mount the podium for laurels at the end.’’
He said that with the level of their preparation, Nigerian athletes had been equipped to face any challenges.
He said: “We will excel. Our first target is to finish top at the end of the games but if we fail to achieve that dream, we will do everything possible to take the second position.”
NAN reports that Nigeria will be playing against Morocco, Botswana and Mauritius in Group A.
The volleyball event serves as a qualifier for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The tournament is scheduled to hold from August 16 to 31 in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
