Some officials of the US Government have commended the Federal Government and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, for their commitment to girl-child education.
The officials gave the commendation when the Sultan delivered a lecture entitled: “Peace and Development initiatives,” at the Wilson Centre, Washington DC.
This was contained in a statement signed by a member of the Sultan’s delegation and the Kogunan Sokoto, Malam Danladi Bako, and issued to newsmen in Sokoto on Saturday.
The statement said the officials were: Assistant Secretary of State, Linda Thomas-Greefield; Ambassador Johnny Carson, Director, Wilson Centre; Dr. Monde Muyangwa; and former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders.
The officials have all applauded the Federal Government and the Sultan on their efforts to improve girl-child education in Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.
In the lecture, the Sultan stated: “There is no law in Islam or in the Nigerian constitution that bars the girl-child from acquiring Western education.
“Islam instructs its followers to search for education even from as far as China, as such, it is not against Western education.”
The statement further quoted Abubakar as announcing plans by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto to set up an all-female University for Medicine in Sokoto.
“This is to help augment the manpower needs in the medical sector and provide more opportunities for the girl-child,” the statement said.
Also speaking at the State Department where he was received by the Director, Sean Casey, the Sultan extolled the Federal Government’s efforts in tackling insurgency in the country.
The US officials, all congratulated Nigerians for a successful 2015 general elections and also reiterated the US government’s support for the anti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari.
