Shot Abia commissioner dead

The Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Kenneth Nwosu, who was shot on July 9 by gunmen died on Monday night.
Nwosu died at the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, where he was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Eze Chikamnayo, who confirmed the death to newsmen in Umuahia on Tuesday, described the attack on Nwosu as “gruesome and shocking”.
Chikamnayo said: “This is a sad moment for the state government, the Executive Council and the entire people of Abia.
“We are mourning because we have lost a colossus.”
Chikamnayo said the late commissioner made significant contribution to the government, describing him as “amiable, easy going and efficient”.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Geoffrey Ogbonna, had told newsmen that the late Nwosu was attacked around 8.05pm at Amakama/Olokoro on the outskirts of Umuahia, while driving back to his country home.
Ogbonna was rushed to the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre after the attack, where a team of doctors, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Augustus Mbanaso, battled to save his life.
Mbanaso later told newsmen that Nwosu was shot several times in the stomach and thighs, with the femur badly damaged.
Nwosu was the immediate past Executive Director of the National Root Crop Research Institute, Umudike.
He was appointed the Commissioner for Agriculture in September, 2013.
