The Speaker of the Osun House of Assembly, Najeem Salaam, on Monday attributed the delay in the conduct of local councils election in the state to paucity of fund.
NAN reports that the state had not conducted election into the 30 local government councils in the last five years.
Najeem said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Osogbo that the state assembly had done its part by passing the state electoral commission law.
He said: “You can see the readiness on the part of the legislature.
“We have passed the law that established the State Independent Electoral Commission, which will look after the elections of officers into the local governments.
“But mind you, immediately after the passage of the law, there were several crisis in the state, the inability of government to pay workers both at the state and local government levels.
“For this reason, the state government was reluctant because of the financial situation of the state.
“Almost on a daily basis, we rub minds with the executive and very soon we will conduct the election.
“People have been saying that the executive secretaries at the local government should go, which we are in support of, but we are saying that there must be money to conduct the election before we can ask them to go.
“But very soon, you will see what will happen at the local government areas in the state.”
