Determined to join the elite division of the Nigeria football league next season, some of the frontrunner teams have continued to hold on tight to the top position of their different groups after the resumption of the Nigeria National League (NNL) hostilities last weekend.
Among the clubs that have maintained their grip on the log after some impressive results at the weekend are Division A1 leaders, Plateau United FC which hammered Supreme Court FC of Abuja 3-0 in Jos to garner 14 points, the same with its closest rivals, Adamawa United FC which also beat Yobe Desert Stars 1-0 in Yola. Adamawa is placed second with inferior goals difference.
But Niger Tornadoes FC 0-2 loss to ABS Football Club in Ilorin at the weekend did not affect its number one position in Division A2 just as Crown FC which was defeated 1-0 in Omoku by Go-Round FC still remains top of Division B1 with 15 points.
However, First Bank FC avenged the first round defeat it suffered in the hands of Nembe City FC by running away with a 2-1 victory over Nembe City in Lagos at the weekend. This ensured the Elephant Boys displaced city-rivals; MFM at the top of Division B2.First Bank now has 16 points to lead the pack.
With the resumption of the second stanza of league last weekend, the competition to finish the race for promotion on high will get hotter as strong rivalry has ensued among the clubs while the NNL secretariat has put checks and balances to ensure that clubs win fair and square.
