Hajiya Jummai Hassan, a nutritionist with the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, on Tuesday advised people to take mango fruit this seasons, saying it helps to prevent certain cancers.
Hassan gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
She said that mangoes contain antioxidant compound, which had been found to protect against leukaemia, colon, breast and prostate cancers.
The nutritionist said mangoes are rich in amino acids, vitamin C and E, flavonoids, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.
She said that the fibre, Vitamin C and pectin content in mangoes help to lower bad cholesterol.
Hassan said: “The fibre content in mangoes help to prevent constipation and aid digestion.”
Hassan said that mangoes contain glutamine, which helps to boost memory and concentration, especially in children who lacked it.
She added that mangoes help to promote good eye sight, prevent river blindness and dry eyes.
The nutritionist said mangoes could be used to clear the skin both internally and externally.
She said: “Mangoes can be used both internally and externally on the skin.
“It helps to clear the clogged pores and eliminate pimples.”
Hassan said that mangoes could also be blended and taken in form of fruit juice.
