The morale of brilliant, outstanding and intelligent but financially incapacitated students within Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency of Oyo State received a reassuring hope and lifeline on August 27.
This followed the purchase and distribution of free forms of the General Certificate of Education examination of the West African Examinations Council for 2015 by the member representing the constituency, Hon. Adedapo Lam-Adesina, to students.
This was done in line with Lam-Adesina’s legislative oversight functions and fulfillment of electioneering promises to the advancement of the education sector in his constituency.
The students were unconditionally selected from secondary schools within the two local governments that make up the constituency by relevant stakeholders under the Omo Oloore Educational Development Scheme at his Constituency office of Ibadan South East Local Government Area.
The gesture is aimed at motivating the helpless students to strive hard towards excellence and greater heights.
In his brief speech at the memorable and epoch making event, Lam-Adesina quoted Nelson Mandela’s famous words on the marble: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
He added: “I have come to realize that when you invest sufficiently in your child via education, you have thoroughly secured a future for yourself and generations yet unborn.
“I have been privileged to exploit untapped opportunities recently purposely because I am educated and that’s why I would as a legislator do everything humanly possible to contribute immensely to the development of the educational sector within this constituency.
“On my part, I have also met with the Nigerian Union of Teachers in the two local governments, most recently, and ANCOPPS to see ways of partnering together as a formidable and indivisible entity to bring the desired change within the best possible time to our constituency.
“So also, I would liaise with other legislators, especially with the House Committee on Education, to ensure our government-owned parastatals saddled with policies formulation and implementation perform their due obligations as gazetted in the acts establishing them.’
Lam-Adesina thereafter promised to give scholarship to the best students during the examination.
He also charged parents to be alive to their responsibilities and admonished them to pay unparallelled attention to the well being and welfare of their wards.
