Got razor bumps? Dermatologist recommends the cure

A Lagos-based private consultant dermatologist on Monday said the application of lime juice, potash, honey, palm kernel oil and aloe vera gel could cure razor bumps.
The dermatologist, Eniola Taiwo, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that razor bumps are caused by unsterilised, infected, unhygienic, bad and burnt clipper or blades.
Razor bumps or ingrown hairs are small, irritated bumps on the skin which appear after shaving or when strands of hair curl back on them and grow into the skin.
Taiwo, who is the Director of Ensy Skin Clinic in Lagos, said the application of the mixtures of the items could help cure razor bumps naturally.
She said: “Razor bumps are small tender pimples commonly found on the back of the head or chin and if left untreated could spread to other parts of the unaffected shaved area.
“It causes irritation and pimples and can also be contacted through the use of same clippers for many people, most especially at the barbing salon.
“Lime juice, potash, honey, palm kernel oil and aloe vera gel when used appropriately and timely will banish razor bumps.
“Mix lemon juice, potash, palm kernel, honey and aloe vera gel in a small bowl.
“These items have anti-bacterial agents.
“You can make a large portion.
“Wash the affected part with warm water, dip a clean towel in the mixture and used it to massage the affected area for 10 minutes.
“Do this continuously and thrice a day.
“Your bumps will disappear gradually.”
Another dermatologist, Dr. Moses Arin, a consultant at Rings Skin Clinic in Lagos, also gave precautions to be observed before shaving.
Arin said: “Before you start shaving, apply shaving gel or cream and allow it to sit for two or three minutes.
“Wash shaving razor with the help of alcohol before and after shaving.
“Change razor blade every week.
“If you are prone to razor bumps, avoid shaving regularly.
“Before shaving, soften hair and skin by applying a towel drenched in warm water, apply moisturiser after shave.”
Arin, however, warned people not to pick or squeeze razor bumps, as it could turn to burns and scars.
He said: “Natural cure is the best option.
“With the natural care, it would diminish.”
