The President of Evangelical Church Winning All, Rev. Jeremiah Gado, on Sunday called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to entrench the rule of law and strengthen national unity.
Gado, who made the call shortly after the Sunday service at ECWA Gospel Church, Romi new Extension, Kaduna, said only fairness and justice would keep the country together.
He opined that Nigeria at 55 was still characterised by “ethnicity, poverty, oppression, subjugation, injustice and all kinds of ethno-religious and political crises”.
According to him, these and many other ills have continued to threaten the unity of Nigeria as a nation.
He noted that before the British imperialists introduced the concept of Nigeria in 1914, every ethnic group was independent.
Gado said: “Post independent Nigeria, some ethnic groups began to claim supremacy over others, which led to division, disintegration, oppression, subjugation and injustice.
“What will unite us and keep Nigeria one is the enforcement of the rule of law, fairness and justice to all, to reassure all Nigerians of a better future.
“With the rule of law fully operational, Nigeria will unite in the match toward total freedom from abject poverty and freedom from oppression of all kinds.”
The cleric added that Nigeria, being the largest black African nation with abundant human and material resources, had a special place in Africa and the world.
Gado however said Nigeria was yet to exploit the potential to its advantage due to disregard for the rule of law, corruption, ethno-religious and political crises.
The clergy called on Nigerians to unite against those working for the disintegration of the country.
On the fight against insurgency, the ECWA President commended the Federal Government for its strong stand against Boko Haram.
He said the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents had put the two peaceful religions, Islam and Christianity on trial.
He said: “Christianity and Islam are religion of peace and Boko Haram insurgents are putting that to test.
“We should all unite to fight these evil doers and see whether or not we will overcome them.”
The clergy commiserated with the families of those who lost their loved ones and relatives in this year’s Hajj tragedy.
