World Championships: Okagbare, others pocket $20,000

Team Nigeria to the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London have been paid all camp allowances due to them.
The 14 competing athletes, including Blessing Okagbare, received $100 dollars per day for 14 days, being $1,400 for each athlete, except Edose Ibadin, who left camp earlier with $800.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, who facilitated the payment, said it was necessary to give the athletes their dues to encourage better performance.
Dalung said: “We will continue to support our sports men and women and pay them all their entitlements.
“Again we have paid the athletes all their allowances as a responsibility and to encourage them.
“These athletes are our pride irrespective of their performance.
“We have settled all their camp allowances today and that will also ginger them to good performances in the remaining events.”
The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Hon. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, thanked the Minister for making it possible for the athletes to be paid.
Gusau said: “I want to thank the Hon Minister Barrister Solomon Dalung for his kind gesture.
“The athletes’ morale has received a boost with the payment of their camp allowances.
“This payment, I believe, will lift the athletes’ spirit in time for the relays where we are expecting a respectable result by our athletes.”
Nigeria is still hopeful of a podium finish in the 4x400m women and 4x100m women.
Abike Agbeniyi is expected on Saturday morning in time to compete in the 4x400m women on Sunday.
Agbeniyi was given a visa late on Friday, while the federation booked her on the next available flight to arrive on Saturday morning.
The Championship ends on August 13, 2017.
