The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has attributed the suspension of the councils of Offa and Oyun local government areas of the state to the fact that the council chairmen have not demonstrated enough capacity to halt the descent to lawlessness in their areas, just as the governor assured the communities that nobody found guilty of sponsoring the violence will be spared from facing the full wrath of the law.
Ahmed said: “The councils felt short of expectations in their responsibilities to maintain law and order and in ensuring the safety of lives and property.”
Ahmed added that the suspension of the councils was also a signal to all and sundry that laws are meant to be complied with and that those charged with the responsibility of implementing laws must always be proactive.
The governor said this on Tuesday when the management of the Nigeria Navy School of Health Sciences paid him a courtesy call to seek greater cooperation with the state on boosting the security efforts of the state government.
Ahmed said that people cannot continue to abuse due process by taking laws into their hands, engage in wanton destruction of property and expect government to fold it arms.
He emphasized that the government has a zero level tolerance for violence as it does not solve problems but create deep animosities.
Ahmed said the state security committee would be expanded to include the Nigeria Navy as part of efforts to strengthen the security of lives and property in the state.
The Commandant, Nigeria Navy School of Medical Services, Captain Ima Ansa, in her remarks, said the Nigeria Navy was ready to render support to the security platform of the Kwara State Government in order to enhance the protection of lives and property in the state.
The commandant, who described the recent crisis between Offa and Erin-Ile communities as unfortunate, said the Naval school has been rendering minimal security duties within its areas of jurisdiction without interference in the local politics.
