The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has clarified that it conferred the University’s honorary doctorate degree on the country’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu because of her service to humanity rather than her office.
This is as the institution stated that two hundred and fifteen students would be awarded first class degrees at its 48th convocation ceremony next week.
Addressing newsmen at the University Senate building on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire said the first lady has been supporting humanity and the institution for over a decade before she become a first lady.
His words, “We did not confer the honorary doctorate degree on her because of her N1billion donation, that is merely an addition.
“She has been supporting humanity, especially women and youth through her various initiatives.
“Oluremi Tinubu is an astute politician and advocate for the underprivileged, particularly women and children.
“She founded the Yeye Asiwaju Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to women and children’s empowerment, and the New Era Foundation, focusing on youth development, environmental health, and community service.

“She has been sponsoring five (5) prizes in the Faculty of Education of the University till date (increased to N50m each).
“She recently donated a whooping sum to upgrade the University Campus environment with the promise to do more”.
Speaking on the classes of degrees to be awarded, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that of the 7,368 prospective graduates, 215 students would be awarded first class degrees honours, 2,197 bag second class upper division, 2,691 graduated with second class lower and 755 graduated with third class honours.
“Sixty-one students graduated with upper credit, 33 with lower credit and 62 graduated with pass. In the unclassified degrees, 13 students bag distinction, 59 pass with distinction, 154 graduated with pass with credit and 169 graduated with pass.
“In the postgraduate’s degrees, 74 would graduate with postgraduate diploma, 708 bag Master’s degrees and 176 bag their Doctor of Philosophy, PhD,” he disclosed.
He added that other dignitaries that would be conferred with honourary doctorate degree include, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, MTN CEO Nigeria, Karl Toriola and Daere Afonya-Akono.
