The Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North said it had gone far in reaching out to members of the Boko Haram sect.
Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, the Chairman of the committee and Minister of Special Duties, said this when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri on Monday.
Turaki said the contact was being made in spite of the current military offensive by the Federal Government.
He said: “We have gone far in reaching out to members of the sect because we believe that the dialogue option is also feasible.
“This is a collective responsibility.
“That is why we will not stop calling on members of the society to help with useful information.”
Turaki commended the governor for his efforts in addressing the security challenge.
He said: “The situation we have here is that of a governor who is on top of the situation.
“Upon our entry into Maiduguri, we see life gradually picking up.
“Information at our disposal shows also that there is lot of paradigm shift.
“Today, people are moving from lack of interest in security to supporting security operatives.”
He also commended residents of the state for standing up to fight the dreaded sect members, saying that it was a sign of good omen.
Turaki explained that the visit was aimed at getting first hand information on the crisis.
Shettima thanked the committee members for the visit and attributed the cause of Boko Haram insurgency to poverty and unemployment.
He said his administration would transform the state in the next few months.
