WBC president, Mauricio Suliaman has clarified that there is no current mandatory set for the winner of Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3.
The heavyweights will meet again in a trilogy bout on July 24, live on talkSPORT, and the situation with the next mandatory challenger will not be addressed until after the fight has happened.
Sulaiman explained to Boxing Social: “At this moment there is no mandatory contender in the division.
“We have this fight that is happening on July 24 and afterwards we will be addressing this matter.”
Whyte previously won the position as mandatory in July 2019 by beating Oscar Rivas.
He then was knocked out by Alexander Povetkin and, in the instant the Russian’s uppercut landed, his mandatory status seemingly evaporated into the thin air of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom HQ back garden.
Despite avenging the defeat and reclaiming the WBC ‘interim’ belt in their rematch, Whyte is still no longer mandatory, according to the WBC.
When asked if Whyte will be ordered as mandatory as he now has the WBC ‘interim’ belt once again, Sulaiman answered in non-committal fashion.
He continued: “Well we have just seen in the news that he will be fighting in August.
“We have not received a sanction request [for the WBC ‘interim’ belt], that’s what we saw in the news. This is always an ever ongoing situation.
“There’s not much I can say right now, we’re in a process that we have to deal with and as soon as we have news about this matter, we will be letting you know.”
