The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has announced the immediate closure of the road leading to the institution from Sokoto city due to the collapse of a culvert.
The closure of the road came on the heels of the institution’s semester examinations.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, announced the closure at the site of the collapsed culvert on Sunday.
Zuru said: “As you can see, the road is in bad shape and to worsen matter the culvert had collapsed.
“No vehicle will be allowed to ply the road.
“The students and other users must use the alternative route of Illela Road.
“We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the ongoing examinations are not hindered.
“We will also make more efforts to provide subsidised transport fares for the students to cushion to the distance to attend lectures.”
Zuru also appealed to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State and the Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, to prevail on the contracting firm to mobilise back to the site.
The Federal Government in 2012 awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the road after a devastating flood washed it away in 2010.
But Mothercat Nigeria Limited, the contracting firm, abandoned the project in 2015, citing lack of funds.
The Federal Controller of Works and the contracting firm could not be reached for comments.
