The United States of America State Department will formally designate dreaded sect, Boko Haram, a “foreign terrorist organization” on Wednesday (today), reports Reuters at http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/12/us-usa-nigeria-boko-idUSBRE9AB19N20131112.
Once designated a terrorist group, US law enforcement and regulatory agencies will block businesses and financial transactions with Boko Haram.
Earlier attempts by the US Government to designate Boko Haram a terrorist organisation had failed.
Reuters said that its request for a State Department spokeswoman to respond to the move was yet to be responded to as at the time it went to press with the news.
Boko Haram has killed thousands of Nigerians, especially in the North East part of Nigeria.
This resulted in the imposition of a state of emergency on Yobe, Adamawa and Borno States by President Goodluck Jonathan about six months ago.
The Senate, last week, granted an extension of six months for the emergency rule to be in place.
