MTV Base has revealed that multi-talented American actor, producer, stand-up comedian, writer and film director, Marlon Wayans, will be the official host for the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards.
This was contained in a statement by Alex Okosi, the Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of MTV Africa, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.
The statement said that Marlon Wayans was an obvious choice to the organisers because of his reputation.
The statement said: “Wayans is a hugely popular entertainment figure known and loved by African audiences from ‘The Wayans Brothers’ and his various movie roles.
“His irreverent humour and infectious energy will definitely make him a great host for the 2014 MAMAs.
“He keeps up the tradition of having famous Black American entertainers host the awards.
“We’ve had musicians Wyclef Jean and Eve and it was nice to also have an actor and comedian host the awards.”
The statement also disclosed that some of the performers that would entertain at the awards were Nigerian artistes Davido, Flavour and Tiwa Savage.
They will feature alongside international stars like Miguel, French Montana, Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Oskido and Professor.
NAN reports that Nigerian artistes topped the list of nominees at the awards with 18 nominations in 11 categories out of the 15 available.
They are Davido, Wizkid, 2face, P-Square, Olamide, Flavour, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Don Jazzy, Dr Sid, Ice Prince, KCEE, May D, Phyno and Tiwa Savage, Clarence Peters, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Chimamanda Adichie.
NAN reports that the MAMA was instituted by the music and lifestyle channel, MTV Base, to recognise creative talents who excelled over the past years in the showbiz industry.
It was staged in Nigeria in 2008 and 2010 and Kenya in 2009 before going into a hiatus.
The awards presentation will take place for the first time South Africa on June 7 at the Durban International Convention Centre.
The awards will be broadcast live across the continent and voting is open on the MTV Base website from April 16 to June 4.
