The Unity Party of Nigeria said on Thursday that it is awaiting the verdict of the Independent National Electoral Commission on the suspension of Dr. Frederick Faseun as the National Chairman of the party.
The UPN disclosed this at the fifth post-registration of its National Executive Committee held in Abuja.
Faseun was suspended at the last NEC of the party held at the same venue last month for alleged anti-party activities.
According to the acting National Chairman of the party, Dr. Manzo Abubakar: “The explanation the Monitoring Committee of INEC are seeking from the legal department (of INEC) is whether our decision to suspend the National Chairman is in line with the spirit of our constitution.”
Abubakar recalled efforts by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunnade Sijuwade, to mediate in the crisis of confidence between Faseun and other members of the executive.
He however said the scheduled reconciliation meeting, fixed for November 1 in Ile-Ife could not hold as a result of the death of a younger brother of the monarch.
Stating that Faseun remained suspended, Abubakar said the party has notified INEC and security agencies on the situation within the party.
Accusing Faseun of allegedly using thugs to threaten his opponents within the NEC, he added: “While the INEC are making efforts to come out with their decision on the position of the leadership tussle of the party, I believe police too are trying to see how they could intervene to avoid shedding of unnecessary blood.”
Meanwhile, the party at its Thursday NEC meeting unfolded the fees and guidelines for primaries for aspirants wishing to run on its platform in the 2015 general elections.
Those wishing to run for presidency, governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly are to pay N5 million, N2.5 million, N500,000 and N250,000 respectively.
Women and the handicapped will run free.
Ward congresses for election of 10 electors from each for all electoral colleges will take place on November 22, electoral college for state House of Assembly is fixed for November 24, while the electoral college for governorship is on November 29.
In similar vein, the electoral college for House of Representatives is on December 6, while those for the Senate and presidency are on December 9 and December 11respectively.
The National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Sokoto, said: “Alternative dates for electoral college not held in accordance with the above schedule will be communicated to INEC as necessary.”
Earlier on, the UPN acting National Chairman had assured members of the party that “every aspirant shall be availed a level playing playing field with respect to the democratic emergence of our standard bearers.”
Abubakar disclosed that the party’s guidelines for primary election was on November 11 forwarded to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega.
