The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has conferred an honorary doctorate on the chairman of Oriental Energy Resources Limited, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, for contributions to national development.
This was disclosed by the Corporate Communications Manager of the company, Mr Sam Umukoro, in Lagos on Friday.
Umukoro said that Indimi was honoured with Doctor of Science (honoris causa), and that the award was presented to him by the chancellor of the university and Shehu Borno, Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, at the university’s 51st convocation on Thursday.
The university said the award was in recognition of Indimi’s commitment to the development of education, advancement of knowledge and humanity in Nigeria.
After receiving the award, Indimi said, “I am truly honored and humbled by this award and recognition for my contributions to the development of education, society and our nation.
“It is indeed a pleasure to receive this honorary doctoral degree from such a great institution.”
Umokoro described lndimi as an astute businessman and great philanthropist whose humanitarian gestures cut across education, health, housing and social welfare.
According to him, over 1,000 students in universities across Nigeria have benefitted from his scholarship scheme.
“Last year, Oriental Energy Resources Limited built a multi-million naira empowerment centre in Mbo Local Government in Akwa Ibom State, as a sustainable enterprise and viable income generator for the youths.
“Recently, the company also donated a state-of-the-art science laboratory complex to the Community Grammar School, Ebughu, in Mbo Local Government Area,” Umukoro said.
He added that through Indimi’s foundation, 100 houses had been built to accommodate 600 internally-displaced persons in Bama, Borno.
