Turkey issues warrants for arrest of 42 journalists in coup probe

Turkish authorities have issued detention warrants for 42 journalists after a failed military coup, a media report said on Monday.
The move came after the arrest of Halis Hanci, a key aide to exiled Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen, and Mohammed Sait Gulen, Gulen’s nephew.
Turkey, which accused Gulen of being behind the failed July 15 coup, has demanded the extradition of Gulen from the US.
On Thursday, Turkey issued arrest warrants for 300 members of the Presidential Guard Regiment, which it later disbanded.
More than 44,000 employees of state institutions have been suspended amid a nationwide probe into the coup attempt for suspected links to the US-based Gulen.
Earlier, the Education Ministry announced that 21,738 civil servants, 21,029 of them teachers, had been suspended.
The Defence Ministry also said 262 military judges and prosecutors were sacked.
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag added that suspects would be tried at civilian courts in the Sincan district of Ankara.
On July 18, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said 208 people were killed by coup attempting soldiers, including 60 police officers, three soldiers and 145 were civilians.
Yildirim said another 1,491 people were also wounded, while over 100 coup plotters were killed.
