Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has charged the Ooni Of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, to start playing a leading role in the task of rebuilding and uniting Nigeria.
Tukur said he gave the charge to the Ooni on his conviction that he is truly committed to building bridges across Nigeria as a monarch with ability to mobilise the youths of Nigeria for the task.
The ex-PDP National Chairman said this in a statement he personally signed in appreciation of the pains the Ooni and his beautiful wife, Wuraola, took to visit him at his residence in Abuja some days ago for consultation.
The Tafidan Adamawa said he was impressed that the Ooni started his reign as a first class monarch with interest of his country at heart and with a burning desire to tap wisdom from elders in the country on making the youths play the roles expected of them for focussed, dynamic and purposeful leadership.
He said it was time the youths of Nigeria took the challenge to rally round a monarch like the Ooni towards synergising efforts with relevant elder statesmen and the government in finding solutions to the daunting problems currently confronting the Nigerian nation.
He said: “I believe in efforts by the Ooni towards building bridges across Nigeria. I noted his burning desire to do this with great interest and then, I concluded that a monarch like him deserves the supports of every one, particularly the elders who had seen it all and are willing to offer very crisp and rewarding suggestions. To me God has prepared the Ooni for leadership and his emergence was never by co-incidence.
“As our governments battle to take Nigeria out of the doldrums with prostrate economy, power problems, terrorism, mass unemployment and others, efforts being made by royal fathers like the Ooni should be appreciated and supported for us to collectively invent Nigeria of our dream.
“While our government at the center continues to step up actions towards fulfilling its agenda for ‘Change’, I am obliged to appeal to Nigerians to work in unison while ensuring that all efforts by the government prove a success in national interest.”
The former PDP Chairman, who lamented the turn of events in party politics in Nigeria, urged leaders of political parties in the country to revert to the basic tenets of democracy as a guide in their conduct, while shunning the vices of corruption and treachery as they propel the affairs of their parties.
Tukur said from experience, he would continue to insist that the predilection by leaders of political parties for consensus arrangements or selection rather than through election, as well as candidate imposition rather than through internal democracy will never serve democracy and national politics any good.
He said although he made sacrifices as the former Chairman of PDP with saboteurs thwarting his efforts, he would nonetheless continue to offer suggestions to deserving leaders as part of his drive towards making Nigeria great again.
