Terrorism: Nigeria’s security no longer guaranteed by number of guns

A former Senior Special Assistant to late President Musa Yar’Adua on Policy, Clement Ofuani, has said the security of Nigeria is no longer guaranteed by the number of guns the country has acquired.
Ofuani said the country is wallowing in insecurity because it was using archaic means to fight Boko Haram sect.
Ofuani maintained that the nation’s obsolete security structure must be overhauled if the war against Boko Haram terrorists must gain ground.
Ofuani, a chartered accountant and pioneer Commissioner for Economic Planning during the defunct administration of Chief James Ibori, wondered why the present security structure, which has outlived the present day intelligence gathering, was still in operation.
According to him, the security structure, which has stayed for over 50 years, should be revamped.
Ofuani, also former Senior Special Assistant on Presidential Matters to President Goodluck Jonathan, said this during his consultative visit to leaders of Peoples Democratic Party in Ukwuani, Ika North East and Ika South Local Government Areas of state on his governorship ambition.
He harped on the need for active legislative and appropriate policies to be made to achieve the security overhaul.
He said: “Security is no longer guaranteed by the number of guns you put on the street but by intelligence gathering, analysis and utilisation.”
Ofuani further argued that rotation of political offices was introduced as a response to Nigeria’s electoral experience, which had shown that people generally vote along ethnic lines that gave undue advantage to candidates from certain demographic majorities, with scant regards for the yearnings of the minority demographics.
Ofuani, who is one of the numerous aspirants from Delta North Senatorial District jostling to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. posited that zoning does not breed mediocrity but that it affords every single part of the state to exhibit its human potentials to lead.
