The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Wukari, Prof. Abubakar Kundiri, on Wednesday appealed to the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution to establish a centre in Wakuri to mitigate conflicts.
Kundiri made the appeal when he led a delegation from the university to visit IPCR Director-General, Prof. Oshita Oshita, in Abuja, according to a statement by IPCR Media Officer, Michael Abu, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Kundiri said that the need for the establishment of IPCR office in the town was to facilitate peace building and conflicts mitigation in Wukari and Taraba State as a whole.
He said that Wukari in recent times witnessed upheavals which had greatly affected the economic and socio-political progress of the state and the country at large.
The V-C said that the IPCR’s presence in the town would boost peace enlightenment activities and harmonious living in the state.
He acknowledged the plausible activities of IPCR in the promotion of social development in Nigeria and pledged consistent collaboration toward dealing with the social challenges confronting the Northeast particularly.
Kundiri also solicited for partnership with IPCR to organise an International Conference on Promoting Social Cohesion in developing countries along with the International Centre for Ethno-Religious Mediation, New York.
He said that the conference invitation had been extended to some institutions such as: the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and Abdusalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies.
According to him, others are: Kukah Centre, Abuja, Yakubu Gowon Centre, TY Danjuma Foundation and Gusau Institute, Kaduna to ensure the success of the international conference.
The conference, scheduled to hold before the end of the year in Abuja, was expected to be declared open by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The V-C said the benefits of the conference include the sharing of ideas, experiences and robust dialogue toward, addressing the challenges of social cohesion in Nigeria and other developing countries.
While receiving the V-C and members of his delegation, Oshita assured that IPCR would partner with FUW to set up Peace and Conflict Management Centre in the university.
He said that IPCR would be more interested in working with the university to further reinforce and consolidate IPCR peace building action being implemented alongside UN partners in the state.
Oshita described the partnership as good with the new university organising such a laudable conference, saying that with such the interaction, there would be some value addition to peace work in the state and Nigeria.
The IPCR boss said that staff of the Institute work in dangerous places but noted that there could be no price too big to ensure peace.
