Beatrice Eyong, the UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said violence against women in elections had been recognised as one of the key obstacles to advancing women’s participation in public life.
An expert, Ify Unachukwu made the call Thursday at a one-day capacity training for media practitioners, orgainsed by Women Situation Room Nigeria (WSRN).
The rally was part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence to awareness against any form of violence against women and girls in particular.
The MoU, which was signed in Abuja on Thursday, would also focus on interventions around gender-based violence, child rights as well as violence against persons.
According to the United Nations, Violence Against Women and Girls is all form of discrimination that seriously inhibits women’s ability to enjoy rights and freedom on the basis of equality with men such as Rape, Sexual Abuse, Female Genital Mutilation among others.
Olele told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lagos that there should be less talk and more action on the issue.
