Joe Ajaero, President, United Labour Congress said on Wednesday that any increase in the Value Added Tax that would be used to pay the N30,000 new minimum wage would not be accepted.
The union stated this in a statement signed by its president, Dr. Bobboi Bala Kaigama and its Secretary General, Musa-Lawal Ozigi, the union stressed that the recovered lot should be tied to projects so as to make life worth living for the people.
According to a statement signed by its President, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and Acting Secretary General, Comrade Simeso Amachree, the TUC lamented: “We are distraught that labour leaders who were in the state to dialogue with the state government over the unlawful 50 percent cut in salaries of workers in the state were confronted with such dastardly act
“Through this plan, the TUC will mobilise resources from its members, affiliates, partners and other investors to invest in a number critical assets across different sectors of the economy
He said: “As a centre, we have said no to anti-unionism, retrenchment, redundancies or other so-called downsizing or right sizing, outsourcing and all other forms of job related anomalies
The statement, signed by Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, the President of the TUC, and Comrade Simeso Amachree, the Acting Secretary General, added: “Where did such idea emanate from for God’s sake at a time the country is bleeding from all sides and seriously gasping for breathe? This is obviously a pointer to the fact that our Senators means no well for the country
For us, it is bad enough that the N18, 000 (Eighteen thousand naira) national minimum wage has become meaningless in the face of the prevailing economic realities. But worse that almost on a monthly basis Nigerians are made to spend more money on transport fare and purchase of fuel at an exorbitant prices. Nigeria is the sixth oil producing country in the world yet the masses are denied petroleum products
Kaigama said the implementation of documented contracts for players is one policy that has ensured that players’ entitlement cannot be denied and gave the assurance that “the TUC is willing to support the LMC in reaching all state governments whose clubs are indebted to the players and coaches to resolve the such pending matter”
The President the Congress, Bobboi Kaigama, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
Kaigama said: “Even state workers have such challenges
Anything less than 50 percent defeats the purpose of the scheme. As it stands today many states claim inability to pay the national minimum wage of N18,000, a sum that is itself barely enough to take the worker home talk less of paying the bills for his family’s shelter, upkeep and development
“Where is even the conscience of the so-called lawmakers? Where are the good roads to drive cars? Why is it that the privileged in this country do not even consider the less-privileged? Lawmakers ride in public transportation in most developed countries to attend to state matters, despite the affluence of their country. The reason our leaders do ridiculous things beats our imagination
He added that both the employers and workers have a duty to give the economy a shot in the arm through selfless service to the nation
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has congratulated Kaigama on his emergence as the president of the TUC
