Super Falcons Assistant Coach, Maureen Madu, has advocated for proper funding of women football clubs in Nigeria and Africa by relevant stakeholders to help develop the game at all levels.
Madu spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure, Ondo State on Friday at the opening ceremony of the Queens Football Consults’ Pre-Season tournament for women football teams in Nigeria.
The former Super Falcons player said football, as a unifying factor, had helped to promote peace at various levels of the society.
She said adequate support from stakeholders would help players and coaches to achieve and develop female football.
The Assistant Coach said: “Support from everyone who loves women football brings motivation to the players and coaches.
“Government can’t do it all alone, philanthropists should also come to the aid of teams, then football can grow in Nigeria.”
Madu commended the organisers of the competition for choosing Nigeria for the maiden edition of the pre-season tournament for women football.
She urged participating teams at the pre-season tourney to play by the rules and give their best.
Also, the Chairman, Ondo State Football Agency, Tajudeen Akinyemi, hailed the idea behind the tournament, saying it would be an eye-opener that female football league needed to be developed and to discover more talents.
NAN reports that Sunshine Queens had defeated Royaltoms Babes 6-0 in the opening match of the tournament, while Bayelsa Queens defeated Phoenix Babes 7-0.
The pre-season competition is staged in Nigeria by Queens’ Football Consult, a leading Sporting Firm based in Guateng, South-Africa.
