The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has condoled with the Nigeria Union of Journalists over the death of three officers of the union in an auto crash.
This was contained in a statement signed on Sultan’s behalf by Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, on Sunday.
Abubakar said: “We received with deep grief and sorrow, the news of a road accident in Osun State which reportedly claimed the lives of three national officers of the Union.
“Coming at this time of our national life, such a disturbing incident only amounts to additional agony for the entire country, especially with daily reports of callous killings in one form or another.”
The Sultan noted with concern “that such youthful professional men and a woman could lose their lives fortuitously in that manner during their dedicated service to the nation.
“The irony of life in this case is that destiny cannot be evaded by any human being, despite any level of carefulness.”
While commiserating with the families of the deceased and the national leadership of the NUJ, the Sultan prayed the Almighty God to grant the souls of the victims eternal rest.
He also prayed to God to grant their families the fortitude to bear the loss.
“We also invoke the mercy of the Almighty God to ensure a speedy recovery for those who were wounded in the accident,” Abubakar said.
The Sultan equally prayed to God to protect the lives of the teeming Nigerian journalists in the course of their professional duties.
“All hands must be on deck to ensure the safety of our roads and the lives of those who are plying them,” the statement added.
