Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, said on Wednesday that his country welcomed cooperation with Russia, particularly in the area of geological prospecting.
Sall met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia for FIFA World Cup.
It was the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
“Senegal is now at a crossroads, and we are open to new partnerships. In addition to our traditional partners France and the United States we are interested in cooperation with China, Turkey and, of course, Russia. We believe that Russia is very important,’’ Sall said at the meeting.
The president added that Senegal would like to receive Russia’s assistance in assessing Senegal’s resources and in mastering resource development technologies.
Over the last two years, new offshore oil and gas deposits have been discovered in Senegal, which is now trying to create an oil industry from scratch.
