Senate leadership accused of hijacking recruitment slots meant for 109 senators

The Senate leadership, led by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, is on collision course with Senators over allegation of hijacking of recruitment slots of government agencies meant for all 109 Senators.
Last week, Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs vowed to investigate lopsided recruitment in some Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
But the about 15 affected agencies have vowed not to appear before the Committee because the leadership of the Senate was carried along during the exercise.
One of the angry Senators who pleaded anonymity revealed that the agencies gave slots to the Senate leadership for the recruitment.
The Senator added that the slots meant for the 109 Senators were hijacked by the leadership of the Senate.
However, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Federal Character, Senator Danjuma La’ah, insisted that the affected agencies must appear to defend their actions.
On threats by agencies that the illegal recruitment probe would not achieve anything because they allegedly carried the leadership of the National Assembly along, La’ah said: “I don’t care (whether they gave out slots to the leadership).
“Is it the leadership that will give them the backing?
“The leadership knows that I am capable of doing my job that is why they gave me that responsibility.
“I am using my sense to fish out the bad elements.
“It is not a leadership directive.
“There are rules and regulations guiding us as a committee.
“The affected agencies should present themselves for clearance because I will not take it easy.
“Our people have suffered in bondage for long.”
