The Senate Committee on Health has berated officials of the Ministry of Health over refusal to disburse N1.5 billion to cancer patients across the country.
The Federal Government provided N800 million in the 2020 budget and N729 million in 2021 for disbursement to cancer patients.
But the records presented by Officials of the Ministry of Health to the committee chaired by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, revealed that the money has not been disbursed to beneficiaries.
Speaking on why the fund wa yet disbursed to the beneficiaries, Director, Department of Hospitals Services, Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, said the Ministry was waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to launch the programme.
According to Adebiyi: “As at June, we were ready to kick off the disbursement, but waiting for Mr. President to launch the programme.”
But the Chairman kicked against the excuses presented before the Committee, saying that the Ministry should start disbursing the money by the first week of December.
He added that the Committee will follow up the disbursement so that Nigerians can benefit from the programme.
