The late Waziri of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki, has been described as the greatest Senate Leader who gave the office of the senate leader character and panache.
The Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, who led a delegation of the Senate on a condolence visit to the Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, made this assertion, adding that Saraki was a highly respected Senate Leader and best known, even decades after leaving the position.
Ndoma-Egba also noted that Saraki demonstrated religious tolerance in character and deeds as he never discriminated along religious, ethnic or any other lines.
The Senate Leader, who described Saraki as Senate Leader Emeritus, commended the deceased for his ability to hold a diverse state like Kwara together for decades and strengthening democratic tenets in the state.
The Governors of Sokoto and Kebbi States, Alhaj Aliyu Wamakko and Alhaji Saidu Dakingari, during a similar visit to Dr. Ahmed, said the death of Saraki was a national loss, as he was a unifying factor in Nigeria’s political terrain.
Ahmed, in his responses, said Saraki was the architect of modern politics in Kwara State through the institutionalization of the concept of consensus in the emergence of candidates for elective positions.
Ahmed said the former Senate Leader also held steadfast to the concept that leadership was about impacting positively on the people and not the self interest of the leaders.
