Resumption: Oyo raises alarm over failure of students to resume

The Oyo State Government says it observed low turnout of students in the first week of school resumption in the third term of the 2021/2022 academic session.

This was contained in a statement by the Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The statement in Ibadan on Friday was signed by Rahman Abdu-Raheem, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology; and Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

While monitoring schools’ resumption, Abdu-Raheem expressed optimism that the low turnout of students in most schools visited would be improved upon by the following week.

The Commissioner said the low turnout observed was an indication that better approaches should be adopted by the teachers, with good relationship with the students.

He said: “This will bring the minds of the young ones closer to the school system; parents should also work with the state government by encouraging positive learning in their children and wards.

“It was observed that teachers in all monitored schools were massively on ground, but with low turnout of students.”

Abdu-Raheem said the present administration had zero tolerance for examination malpractice.

He urged principals and teachers to be circumspect, adding that there were various sanctions awaiting defiant ones.

Also, Adeniran appealed to teachers in public primary schools to begin teaching immediately.

He admonished them to put in their best in complementing the efforts of the present administration so as to attain qualitative education in the state.

The SUBEB boss said a full monitoring team would be deployed to public primary schools on Monday, charging teachers to love their pupils.

“This will attract students’ interest in the teaching and learning processes,” Adeniran said.

Some of the schools visited were Olubadan High School, Ibadan; Adekile Goodwill Grammar School, Aperin; Aperin Boys High School; CAC Grammar School, Aperin Oniyere; and Government Secondary School, Aperin, all in Ibadan.
