The House of Representatives on Tuesday, urged the Federal Government to direct security operatives to immediately crackdown on the rampaging criminal elements in Katsina state.
This followed a motion by Hon. Ahmed Safana at the plenary.
The motion was on the urgent “need for federal government’s intervention on the recurring abduction of persons and cattle rustling by bandits in Safana/Batsari/Dan Musa Federal Constituency of Katsina state.
Moving the motion, Safana noted, that attacks on communities within the state by heavily armed bandits and cattle rustlers had become a daily occurrence.
According to him, the magnitude of attacks on members of my constituency has reached an alarming stage as the perpetrators of the aforesaid criminal acts have continuously killed people in various communities.
He said: “Some of the affected people include women and children who try to put up resistance during the attacks.”
The lawmaker expressed worry that any further delay by government to contain the atrocities would result in a colossal loss of lives as well as paralyse economic activities in the area.
He said: “In spite of persistent outcry from various communities, there has not been significant crackdown by relevant security agencies in fighting the cruelty and criminal activities perpetrated by the kidnappers and cattle rustlers.
“The fundamental duty of any government is the protection of lives and property of its citizens.
“It is the constitutional duty and responsibility of this hallowed chamber to take action wherever such level of inhuman and brutal attacks are being inflicted on any community or a group of people.”
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.
The House therefore, urged the National Emergency Management Agency to urgently provide relief materials and supply the immediate needs of the displaced persons in accordance with the provisions of section 6 (j) of its Act.
