The House of Representatives on Wednesday said it would investigate the activities of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency to check air crashes in the country.
The House, however, said the investigation would be conducted after the constitution of its committees.
According to it, the Committee on Aviation, when constituted, has been mandated to investigate the activities of NCAA and NAMA to check the incidents of air crash.
The resolution of the lawmakers followed a motion by Rep. Henry Archibong (Akwa Ibom- PDP) on the need to screen domestic air planes operating in Nigeria’s airspace to ensure their operational reliability.
Archibong explained that some of the commercial airplanes were more than 20 years old and had been written off in the countries where they were purchased.
He claimed that most plane crashes in the country resulted from the use of “outdated airplanes, poor maintenance and lack of supervision from the relevant authorities”.
He expressed dissatisfaction that in spite of all the air disasters that had occurred in the country, no official reports had been produced with regard to the actual cause of the crashes.
Passing the resolution to probe the aviation agencies, the House also mandated its Committee on Legislative Compliance, when constituted, to monitor the level of compliance of NCAA and NAMA with aviation regulations.
