The German Red Cross on Monday said the fate of 1.3 million people missing in World War II had remained unknown 70 years after the end of the conflict.
The President of the aid group, Rudolf Seiters, made this known in Hamburg, ahead of the May 8 anniversary of the war, which ended on May 8, 1945.
Seiters said: “Well over 10,000 search requests are still made every year to the aid group.
“Investigations into prisoners of war and civilian prisoners, into soldiers who went missing and displaced people from World War II, remain a central task of the German Red Cross tracing service.”
Similarly, the Head of Tracing Service’s control centre, Dorota Dziwoki, said data from Russian archives were still being evaluated.
“The majority of requests for information on the missing persons come from pensioners who want to know when and where their relatives died and where they were buried,” Dziwoki said.
