The Nigeria Prisons Service has arrested one Samuel Ojekomma, 24, for allegedly attempting to smuggle a mobile handset to an inmate at the Medium Security Prisons, Nsukka in Enugu State.
Chukwuemeka Monday, the prisons Command Public Relations Officer in Enugu, made the disclosure in a statement he issued in Enugu on Thursday.
Monday said that the incident happened at a court premises in Nsukka where the inmate was being arraigned.
He said the handset was carefully concealed inside a loaf of bread and was detected by an officer who examined the item.
The command’s spokesperson said that the suspect, who hails from Eweatu Ichan in Ubiaja Local Government Area of Edo, had been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
He said that the Controller of Prisons in the state, Ndubuisi Ogbodo, said that visits to prisons were free and warned prospective visitors to desist from bringing prohibited items including phones and hard drugs to prisons.
Monday said that such action defeated the objective of imprisonment which was reformation adding that the service would deal decisively with anyone who disobeyed the order.
