Police kills three suspects, arrests 12 in Delta

Twelve suspected armed robbers, including a rapist, one Amedi Emmanuel, were on Wednesday nabbed in Delta State.

Amedi’s gang suddenly attacked one Onwuka’s compound at 30, Ezenei Avenue, Asaba and raped a member of the family.

The gang, said to be members of the dreaded Aye secret cult, thereafter robbed them of one 48 inches plasma Sony television, one 32 inches LG television, one laptop charger and one Play Station II before escaping.

Luck however ran against their leader (Amedi).

The suspects, paraded alongside Amedi at the command headquarters in Asaba, included one Lawal Magaje, Abdalsalam Abubakar, David Agbro, Chigozie Ibezim, Izobo Ajoke, Onosiogho Ejebename, Akashili Chukwunalu, Chukwunalu Emjeke, Godspower Presley, Ovie Tega and Peter Gwagwa.

Although three members of Amedi’s gang escaped arrest, one of the five-man gang, who engaged a police patrol team in a shootout at PTI Junction, Effurun, met his waterloo.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Celestina Kalu, said during the parade of the suspects: “The dead criminals were overwhelmed by the superior fire power of the police.

“Two of the armed robbers were shot and arrested while others escaped with bullet wounds.

“The arrested suspects were rushed to Central Hospital, Warri for treatment, but they later died.”

Chigozie Ibezim and Izobo Ajoke, two of those paraded, were arrested along Orhuwohru Road in Ovwian Aladja while attempting to rob one Martins Efe Ojo at gunpoint.

Kalu said the three-man gang that operated in their car with registration number CL 970 APP, were killed shortly after they robbed one Chukwudi Chekwe and his colleague of their Toyota Camry car, with registration number DD 448 APP, and 30,000 by the patrol team along Enerhen Motel by Wind Rose Street, Warri.

She narrated how Godspower Presley, Ovie Tega and Peter Gwagwa also fell prey to the teeth of the operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad based at Warri.

Kalu said: “While acting on a tip-off, SARS arrested the suspects in connection with armed robbery cases.

“They have since admitted their membership of a robbery gang and have confessed robbing one Mrs. Rukevwe (surname unknown) of N500,000 on May 15 at about 5.30pm at Film Hall Junction, Ovwi.”

While she listed the items recovered from them to include, 10 locally made guns, 31 cartridges, six vehicles and four Pump-Action guns, she said those that have confessed to the crime would be prosecuted.
