Plans to scrap councils will fail – LG boss

Alhaji Halliru Abdullahi, the Chairman of Rimin Gado Local Government Area of Kano State, said on Thursday that the recommendation by the National Conference to scrap local governments might not succeed.
Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that the plan was a “political gimmick”.
“The same issue was brought during the tenure of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, and it failed,” he said.
According to him, any attempt to scrap the councils would spell doom for the country because such effort was not in public interest.
“local governments are closer to the grassroots and anybody who thinks that local governments should be removed is anti-common man,” he said.
Abdullahi, however, advised delegates at the conference who had been agitating for scrapping of the councils to shelve their plan.
“We advise delegates at the conference to think of other serious issues which would benefit the common man and ensure development in the country,” he said.
