Panic as fire guts police station

There was pandemonium on Sunday at the Alapere Police Station, Lagos State after a section of the station went up in flame.
The fire was said to have started in the morning, just as people were preparing to go to church and others were already in the church.
The fire started from a part of the station and policemen and women were sighted running helter skelter.
Although nobody could say for sure what led to the outbreak of the fire, some residents attributed it to power surge.
The fire, which was spreading fast, was finally controlled by fire fighters who got to the scene in the nick of time.
An eyewitness, simply identified as Pastor Emmanuel, said: “The fire incident occurred on Sunday.
“It started from one of the rooms at the station.
“The fire did not affect the whole building.”
As at Monday morning, builders were already rebuilding and roofing the affection section.
Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the development.
Braide said: “It was true that a section of Alapere Police Station was gutted by fire, but nobody died.
“Nobody was even injured.
“It was caused by power surge, but everything is under control.
“No suspect escaped from detention in the midst of the confusion.”
