As the countdown to the governorship election in Ondo State continues, a leading aspirant for the position, Akinwale Akingbade, has called for peace among aspirants for the coveted position.
Akingbade, who is seeking election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, has also hosted an “open house” meeting that brought the leadership and elders of the party in the state together for cordial discussions.
In details made available to the media on Thursday, he said as a leading aspirant, there was the need for him to urge all party members and the electorate to promote peace for democratic, social and economic growth.
“It is important for me to state it clearly that it is only in the atmosphere of peace that we can achieve our individual and collectives objectives of democratic stability and economic advancement. I want everyone to know that I will be the voice that promotes peace in Ondo politics,” he stated.
Akingbade revealed also that prior to this time, he had embarked on a massive grassroots campaign programme that has taken him across all the 18 local governments of the state.
The tour, he explained, enabled him to meet most of the first and second class traditional rulers as part of the process to solicit the support of important personalities in the state and also fully harness their ideas about development.
Some of the important personalities that he met included the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi; Alani of Ido Ani, Oba Gen Olutoye; Jegun of Ile-Oluji, Oba A. Adetimehin; Owa-Ale of Ikare-Akoko, Oba Samuel Adegbite Adedoyin; Akure High Chiefs; the Chief Imam of Akure; and the Hausa Community in the state.
Akingbade also consulted with leaders and elders of the party within and outside the state.
He said: “Since October 2015, we have been running grassroots tours to enable us have a firsthand experience of the situation of things in the state and the challenges the people are facing. I believe that this is a necessary precursor to effective leadership. It will not be proper to proffer solutions to the problems that the people are facing without understanding their plight. This is one the reasons for moving across all the local government areas.”
Akingbade, a technology expert, also said the tour of all local governments was for him to gather ideas that people have, harmonise them and then merge them into policies and working documents for the overall development of the state.
Ondo State, he noted, has a lot of potential such that with the proper harnessing of the human and natural resources in the state, there will be no need to classify it among poor states in the country.
He explained that as an indigene of the state, he was determined to carry everyone along so that it becomes an economic power in Nigeria.
He said: “It is my intention as a son of the soil to fully identify with people of Ondo state and also design policies that can stand the test of time in the overall development of Ondo. The potential of the state is high and must be tapped fully to properly develop our people and nation.”
Akingbade added that a more detailed plan for interfacing with people of Ondo State would soon be unveiled.
