Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, has demanded for an improved deal at Chelsea or bid the Stamford Bridge outfit farewell in the new season.
Since Roman Abramovich became Chelsea owner back in 2003, the Blues have been known for spending vast amounts of money to bring some of the world’s top players to West London, but they have also made a strong commitment to bringing in young players in a bid to mould the stars of the future.
That is shown with 30 players currently out on loan, mostly youngsters, in a bid to get them valuable first-team football away from Stamford Bridge.
One of those players is defender Omeruo, who joined the club from Standard Liege in 2012, before being loaned out immediately to Dutch side, ADO Den Haag.
An 18-month stay in Holland served as a much needed taste of first team football for the Nigerian, but was back in the Chelsea reserves upon his return to the club, and it wasn’t until January of this year where Omeruo was able to play again, as manager Jose Mourinho sent him off on loan to Middlesbrough, helping out his former Real Madrid assistant manager, Aitor Karanka, in the process.
Omeruo, who can play at centre back or right back, has impressed at the Riverside Stadium and his promising displays will not only lead to a World Cup appearance with Nigeria this summer, but also a new deal at Stamford Bridge if the Blues are willing to improve their offer.
Omeruo’s agent, Chika Akujobi, has moved to slam Chelsea for their contract offer to his client, suggesting that his experience with Nigeria and Middlesbrough should make him more desirable to the club.
Akujobi said: “Chelsea have made an offer for Kenneth, but we believe he deserves much more than they are offering.
“He has done well at Middlesbrough and he will be going to the World Cup with Nigeria and all these should count for something.”
Impressive performances at the World Cup could well crank up interest in the 20-year-old, so Chelsea really need to tie him down to a long-term deal if they are intent on developing him.
