African Cup of Nations 2013 winner, Geofrey Oboabona, has expressed his willingness to add the African Nations Championship trophy to his silverwares.
The Sunshine Stars of Akure skipper stated this on Wednesday during a brief chat with The Eagles Online.
Oboabona said: “It will be good to play at the CHAN competition. I will also like to win it and further prove that the AFCON win was never a fluke.
“I’m always ready to smiles to the faces of Nigerians and one of the ways to do that is by winning the CHAN tournament.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria will compete in the 2014 African Nations Championship qualifiers after the Nigeria Football Federation reversed its decision to opt out of the tournament for locally-based players.
The Nigerian Football Federation announced in April it was withdrawing the team from the qualifiers in order to cut costs.
But the West Africans will now play Ivory Coast in a two-legged qualifier in Calabar, Cross River State in June for a place in next year’s finals in South Africa.
“The team will play in the CHAN qualifiers,” NFF spokesman, Ademola Olajire, informed on Wednesday.
“Despite the challenges, we never formally withdrww from the championship itself, so there is nothing to reconfirm.
“This will be a great opportunity for the local players to showcase their talent on a continental level.
“The present crop of players are good enough to make it to the championship proper in South Africa.”
