NURTW to implement cashless policy

The National Union of Road Transport Workers has set up a joint committee to fast-track the implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria cashless policy among its members, an official said.
Alhaji Najeem Yasin, the NURTW National President, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday that the project would be implemented through its Mobile Money Transfer project.
Yasin explained that the project will allow Nigerians to have access to formal financial services easily through the use of mobile phones at motor parks.
He said the project would enable customers to deposit and make withdrawals at NURTW operated motor parks across the country and thereby reduce the challenges of distance or cost of getting to commercial banks.
Yasin said the union took a proactive measure to partner Teasy Mobile Money, licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria to engage in mobile financial transactions.
He said the essence of the partnership was to provide regular financial services to both members of the union and the public at various motor parks.
He said: “To ensure the success of the project, a joint committee charged with the responsibility of championing the implementation of the project was set up.
“The committee’s role is to provide strategic direction and leadership to ensure that the objective of the partnership is achieved.”
Yasin said the committee had undertaken advocacy and enlightenment tours to council areas within the 12 pilot states, including Lagos and Kano States as well as Federal Capital Territory.
He said the committee held discussions with executives of the councils on the functionality of the project and added that arrangement was at advance stage to test-run the project in the FCT, Lagos and Kano States.
“To this end, offices provided by the union at the motor parks have been branded,” Yasin said.
He said mobile cubicles would be used in motor parks that had no office accommodation.
“One of the branded cubicles will be on display at the union’s national secretariat,” he noted.
He solicited the support of councils under the pilot states in the success of the project.
