The Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria has advised the Waheed Odusile-led newly inaugurated Nigeria Union of Journalists national executives to let the welfare of Nigerian journalists be its priority.
This was contained in a congratulatory message signed by the Chairman of MMPN, Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun, and made available to journalists.
Balogun said the new NUJ leadership should see its election as a challenge and opportunity to also restore the dignity of the journalism profession.
According to him, the leadership has a big challenge to address the issue of non- professionals who have invaded the profession through the numerous social networks as well as non-payment of salaries to journalists by some media owners.
The MMPN also urged the Odusile-led executive to fulfill its electoral promises of establishing an NUJ radio station, free insurance scheme and other welfare packages geared towards enhancing the practice of journalism in Nigeria.
The Muslim Media group also advised the new leadership to see to the passage of the Journalism Enhancement Bill being championed by Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa at the National Assembly as a way of restoring dignity and control to the profession in the country.
The MMPN believes that the profession was too noble to be without a workable control mechanism, insisting that the new leadership must address the challenge.
While congratulating the NUJ for conducting a peaceful and successful election, the MMPN urged other contestants to work together with the new leadership and see their loss as an act of God.
The MMPN, therefore, wished the elected officers a successful and action-packed tenure in office
