The National Sports Commission has joined other well-wishers in condoling with the family of Awolowo over the death of Mama Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, who passed away on September 19, 2015.
The Zonal Coordinator, South West Zone One of NSC, Dr. Steve Olarinoye, on Tuesday led the NSC contingent that included the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium manager, Alhaji Ahmed Jumare, and the head of administration of the zone, Grace Majoyegbe, to Ikenne, the ancestral home of the late sage, to present a condolence letter of the commission to the family.
Dr. Olarinoye was received by the eldest daughter the late HID Awolowo, Rev. Tola Oyediran, who collected the condolence letter and thanked the NSC for associating with the family.
The zonal coordinator, while delivering the message of the Director General of NSC, Mallam Al-Hassan Yakmut, said the sports commission wishes to condole with the Awolowo family over the death of the wife of the late sage, adding that the NSC is proud to associate with the Awolowo family.
He said: “We thank God that Mama before her death witnessed the renaming of the former Liberty Stadium after the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo who masterminded the construction of the edifice that was commissioned in 1968.
“We also thank God that the former President, Goodluck Jonathan gave an express approval to the renaming proposal which was forwarded to him by the NSC in consideration of the great efforts made by the late Obafemi Awolowo in building a solid foundation for sports in Nigeria.”
