Rangers International FC of Enugu on Wednesday trashed Wikki Tourist of Bauchi 2-1 in the Nigeria Professional Football League week 10 encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that both sides missed several goal-scoring chances in the first half that ended goalless.
Rangers took the lead in the 60th minute, when Michael Uchebo netted his first goal in the current league.
Godwin Aguda made it 2-0 for the home team in the 78th minute, having powered home a shot through two Wikki defenders.
Abba Abubakar, however, reduced the tally to 2-1 in the 87th minute with a powerful header that first hit the bar before finding the back of the net.
In a post-match interview, Rangers Coach Olugbenga Ogunbote hailed his boys for putting up a great performance.
He said that Wikki came to prove a point in Enugu, “which made the Peoples Elephants to fight like a wounded lion”.
Ogunbote said that he rested some of his key players because of their weekend Confederation’s Cup engagement against Etoile the Sahel in Tunisia.
He said: “I want the players to be fresh to the match. I do not want them to suffer exhaustion ahead of the Tunisia game, when we shall need them.
”We are going to Tunis for three points so as to continue our unbeaten run in the competition.”
Wikki’s Coach Aliu Zubiru declined to take part in the post-match interview, saying that he needed to take care of his players.
NAN reports that Rangers now occupied the sixth position in the table with nine points from four matches, winning three and losing one.
