The National Orientation Agency has taken its awareness campaign on social issues bordering on COVID- 19 prevention, dangers of rape and peaceful co-existence to Okigwe area of Imo State.
The motorised campaign carried out on Friday across major streets in Okigwe had the theme “Motorised Campaign on Building a People of Peace: Working Together for Peaceful Co-existence, COVID-19 Prevention and Fighting Rape.”
The state-wide campaign is expected to take place across the three geopolitical zones of the state.
Moving round Okigwe with periodic stopovers, the team harped on the need to maintain social distancing, wearing of face masks, continuous and consistent hand washing routine and using alcohol based hand sanitisers as preventive measures as stipulated by the NCDC.
In an interview after the campaign, the Deputy Director, NOA, Imo State, Nazzy Njoku, said there was the need to still draw the consciousness of people to the fact that coronavirus is real and for them to still maintain the stipulated protocols.
”We are asking them to stay safe and do all the necessary procedures the government told them to do in order to be safe, especially in the use of face masks and regular hand washing,” he said.
Njoku said that the Federal Government was also doing all it could to curb the scourge of rape in society, adding that there was a law against rape and vulnerable persons, especially the female folks.
He said that there were stiffer punishments for those who commit such a crime.
Njoku condemned the recent widespread rape cases, noting that anyone found guilty of the act or any gender-based violence would face the full wrath of the law irrespective of class, gender or status.
On peaceful co-existence, the acting director appealed to the people of Okigwe to maintain peace, tolerance and freedom, adding that development and prosperity thrived when there was peace.
