The Nigerian Army has confirmed the retirement of 51 officers.
The Army, however, said the retirement was based strictly on laid down rules and regulations of service and not any other motive as being speculated in some quarters.
Those retired were made up of 12 major generals, 25 brigadier generals and 12 colonels.
The Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Training School, Jaji, Kaduna State, Major General Mohammed Isah, was among those retired.
The school was recently attacked by dreaded sect, Boko Haram.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Major General Bolaji Koleoso, told newsmen the retirements were based strictly on service regulations.
Koleoso said for instance if a major general is 56 years and is not promoted, he would be retired in conformity with service regulations.
For brigadier generals and colonels, the ages for retirement if not promoted are pegged at 54 years and 52 years.
He said some of those who left, however, did so voluntarily.
He said: “Subsequently, the Army Council approved their retirement from service having attained the mandatory age ceiling for each rank.
“Retirement from any noble profession, especially from the army, is considered a noble exit, which every officer hopes and prays for.
“To now turn round to give such a milestone exercise a negative flavour is, to say the least, mischievous.”
