A education and development consultant, Dr. Dayo Ogundimu, has stated that Nigeria is “racing to the bottom” as it tops the list of developing countries with 10.5 of its children are out of school.
Ogundimu stated this on Monday in Kano where he emphasized that there is a need for education to be seen as more than a “meal market” but also have an impact in the socio-economy of the country.
He stated that every country has an educational plan that is based on its manpower and socio-economic development goals but in Nigeria that have not been the case as the Universal Basic Education is much more concerned with number of chairs given as contracts, number of classrooms built in the countries, etc.
Ogundimu noted that in the US, there is a programme called “Race to the top”, where the government check the texts course of students from other countries and train the American child either technologically or otherwise in that line to help the students compete globally.
He also emphasized that the poor political will of the government, poor remuneration of teachers, poor learning environment and other factors are the reasons why the country cannot compete globally educationally.
He further proposed a socio ecological model which the communities and the government all have a role to play to ensure that education is given its necessary priority and he encouraged the school feeding programme, back to school programme, school-community based management committee, school industry partnership as some of the ways to move education forward in the country.
The Eagle Online News reports that the programme was a two days engagement for bloggers organised by the Child Rights Information Bureau, UNICEF in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of information and Culture to promote equity in education for children.
