The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has canvassed that Nigeria concentrates on sporting events where she has comparative advantages and the potentials of winning laurels rather than groping for laurels in sports circles.
Governor Ahmed said this when the leadership of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, led by its National Chairman, Alhaji Saidu Abubakar, paid him a visit over the weekend.
The governor attributed the inability of Nigeria to win laurels, in consonant with her potentials, to the fact that the country has not been very strategic in its sports development.
He said: “If we have been very strategic, with the little we have recorded, a lot more should have happened to sporting activities in Nigeria.”
According to him, while Nigeria should evolve a deliberate policy to develop her capacity in other sports, those specific areas where we have obvious comparable advantage as a result of geography and physique should be strengthened and consolidated upon.
Ahmed advocated for a reduction in public sector involvement in sports, while the private sector should play more prominent roles.
The low involvement of the private sector in sports promotion, he noted, has engendered a culture of compromise that has undermined the nation’s potentials in sports.
On the state-owned Kwara United football club, Governor Ahmed assured the lovers of the club side that a company would be registered to run it as a business enterprise with Kwarans as shareholders.
This, he said, will give everybody a sense of belonging as co-owners of the club side.
The National Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Saidu Abubakar, in his remarks, commended the state government for paying 100 per cent sign on fees of players and officials of Kwara United Football Club.
Abubakar said sports writers were appreciative of the ongoing renovation of sports facilities in the state as part of efforts to promote sports development.
